If there is one thing the most successful and widely used software products have in common, it is the ability to be easily customized and extended to suit the specific needs of their users. For many years I have dreamed of Author-it having that same ability. Today we realize that dream. Today we begin a new chapter in the life of Author-it with the official release of the Author-it SDK, Author-it Plug-ins, and Author-it DevHub.

Getting here has taken a huge effort from many devoted and talented people at Author-it. While it has been a team effort, the lead developer of the Author-it SDK, John Mikkelsen, deserves special recognition for his vision and efforts in making this project a reality. I think the result is absolutely fantastic and I am sure you will agree once you start using it.

Author-it has been always been committed to the support of open standards. All Author-it content is completely portable and open using XML and we have added support for new and emerging standards, like DITA, as they have evolved. The addition of the Author-it SDK now makes Author-it even more open by allowing you to access, control, extend, and automate every aspect of Author-it using the open standards based, web services API. To make it even easier we have made the API available over SOAP, JSON, TCP, and direct .Net reference. No mater what development platform you choose, you will be able to easily work with the Author-it API.

We have done all this to empower you, our clients, our partners, and 3rd party developers to take Author-it where you need it to go. To build plug-ins that will seamlessly extend the user interface, to create integrations with other systems, to import or export content, to automate processes, to build new publishing formats, or anything else you can dream up.

I am a strong believer in community, the Author-it DevHub is your community. It has been built to support developers by providing the tools, resources, and interaction with your peers to help you build solutions on Author-it technology. Welcome to the Author-it DevHub, we are very excited to see what we can all achieve together.
